Obituary for Jose "Joe" Louis Chavez

Jose was born 1:38 p.m. to Luciano Magallanez Chavez & Rosa Navarrette Mata Chavez on October 12, 1956 in Odessa,Texas and peacefully died 5:23 a.m. January 26, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at home in Soledad, CA. He fought a courageous battle of stage 4 diagnosed cancer for 2 years and died at the age of 62. Jose was a son, brother, cousin, uncle, great-uncle, father, and friend who will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Moving to California at the age of 12 from Texas with his family, Jose learned precise work ethics and skills of working in all areas of agriculture harvesting during the summer months including school winter recess and attended Main Street Middle School as well as Gonzalez High. Jose completed High School in the State of Washington,then later joined U.S.Army Training Center Brigade Company D in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and trained as a communication wire line specialist. He was stationed in Germany and Stateside in Kentucky upon honorable discharge.
He worked for the Soledad Housing Authority Maintenance and then was employed for Sensient Technologies as a Technician in Greenfield for 25 years until the company moved operations. Jose later came to be recognized and honored for 15 years of service by the Soledad Community Health Care Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad from where he retired in June of 2018.
His retirement gave him the enjoyment of spending time with his grandson Thomas. Jose would also travel to Greenfield by bus to visit Diamond (pet),taking walks downtown. Jose was an MST constant passenger and would give up his seat to those who needed the seat more than him.
Jose at his age of 40, became a proud father to his only daughter Cassiopia Cassandra Chavez in 1996. His grandfatherly love came when grandson,Thomas was born in 2017.
Jose's hobbies included collecting Star Wars movies, comic books, and watching Sci-fi movies and History channel on TV as well as late night comedy. He enjoyed wrestling and football. Jose was also known to enjoy very lucky winnings in lottery and scratchers. His love of BBQ cooking for the family events was very much admired by his nephews that Jose did pass down his secret sauce knowledge.
Jose was preceded in death by his younger brother, Luciano M Chavez jr. (1978) Soledad, CA; father, Luciano M Chavez, (1994) Soledad,CA; oldest brother, Luciano Pete Gonzales, (2018) Santa Maria, CA
He is survived by 15 month old pride and joyful grandson,Thomas Hugo Augustin, by daughter, Cassiopia Cassandra Chavez.
Jose is also survived by his mother Rosa N. M. Chavez, King City, CA. Sisters are Guadalupe Sylvia Ann Chavez, (Reynaldo G.Razo) with whom Jose resided at the home in Soledad, CA.
Mary Ann Chavez Raya, (Delfino Canchola Raya) , South Gate CA.
Brothers surviving are Richard Chavez Reschman, (Gracie), Las Vegas, NV. and Danny Chavez, Soledad.
Jose is survived by his daughter's mother, Rebeca Mejia,and her son Joseph, many nieces and nephews and other loving relatives.and pet Chihuahua,Diamond.
He always had a smiling sense of good humor and never let on that he was hurting.
He received the outpouring loving care from all his near and far family members, friends. co-workers in the community including Pacific Cancer Care of Monterey, Bridge Hospice of Salinas, and Veterans Administration outpatient Clinic in Marina, and Palo Alto, CA.
The family wishes to express thanks for providing an excellent level of care, comfort, and support for him and his family during the last days of his life.

Visitation will be held January 30.2019 from 4pm to 8 pm at Woodyard Funeral Home, followed with rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be held January 31, 2019 at 10 am at Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church 235 Main Street Soledad, followed with burial at the Soledad Cemetery District.
