Obituary for Christian Hanson Baird

Christian Hanson Baird died peacefully in his son’s home on February 23, 2018 in Salinas California.

He was born July 8, 1923 in Alameda California to Alexander and Marie Baird, immigrants from Scotland. He was the final child of five children. He is preceded in death by his first wife Alice Baird, son John, and second wife Phyllis. Survivors include his sons Tim (Barbara) of Poway California, David (Rhonda) of Watsonville, Chris (Kathy) of Salinas; 6 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

Mr. Baird grew up in the Alameda and Oakland area and graduated from Castlemont High School in 1941. On leaving high school, he worked briefly as a sheet metal apprentice, and then in the shipyards of Alameda, working on Navy ships for the war effort. He then joined the Army in 1943. He was sent briefly to Fort Ord on his admittance, and quickly sent to "boot camp" at Fort Polk in Louisiana. His high school sweetheart (Alice) traveled by train from Oakland Ca. so they could be married before being assigned to duty in Europe. He served in England, France, and Belgium in the Transportation corps regulating personnel and commodities. At the end of the war, he and Alice began their family and his career with the Bank of America in 1946 in the Santa Cruz area, and then relocated to the Salinas Valley in 1951. He was bank manager in the Soledad and Gonzales branches for many years and enjoyed his relations with the community and farmers. Many of his arrangements were on a handshake. He was a member of, and past president of, the Chamber of commerce and Rotary International. He was an active founding member in the Trinity Episcopal Church of Gonzales. He volunteered for the American Heart Association and Babe Ruth and Little League Baseball. On retirement from the B of A, he and Alice relocated to Turlock Calif. He had a love for fishing and woodwork, and also enjoyed listening to music and working with amateur radio, earning his radio license in 2004. He volunteered with the Meals on Wheels organization delivering meals to elderly and shut-in’s for several years. He also became involved with the Barber Shop organization in Modesto and sang with the “Golden Valley Chorus” who won several competitions. His most recent involvement was with the Sons in Retirement as both a member and officer. His final years were spent with his second wife Phyllis in the retirement community of Samaritan Village in Hughson California. He maintained interest in helping others and was Secretary for the house of worship in the Samaritan Village.
He moved back to Salinas in the fall of 2014 to Sunrise Villa, where he found enjoyment in his reminiscing of the past, singing along to his favorite music, and getting visits from his favorite dog Maisie.

There will be no public service as per his request. Internment will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine, Ca. Arrangements are being made by Woodyard Funeral Home in Soledad, Ca.

Contributions in lieu of flowers are requested to Bridge Hospice, 889 Corporate Way
