Obituary for Alicia Gallegos Sibaja

Alicia Gallegos Sibaja, aged 82, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her home in Gonzales, California on September 20, 2017. Alicia was born June 21, 1935, in Mecca, California, the daughter of Magdaleno Gallegos Martinez and Guadalupe Reyes.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Virgilio Sibaja Arango; nine children and spouses,
Alicia A. Sibaja (Antonio Marquez), Virgilio (Gina) Sibaja Jr., Francisco J. (Leticia) Sibaja, Yolanda J. (Steve) Camarena, Teresa A. (Arthur) Corpuz, Felicia M. (James) Andrews, Jaime G. (Maria) Sibaja, Alma L. Sibaja, and Lucia P. Sibaja.
Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Six Siblings and their spouses, Edward (Lorene) Cabrera, Elvira (Carl) Uldall, Rutilia Baltazar,
Angel R. Cabrera, Gilbert Cabrera, Esther Cabrera and Sister-in-law, Carolyn Cabrera .

Her Father, Magdaleno G. Martinez, Mother, Guadalupe R. Cabrera Step-Father, Rutilio Cabrera, Brother, Rutilio Cabrera Jr., Sister, Isabel Cabrera, and Brother Francisco Cabrera precede her in death.

Alicia thoroughly enjoyed life. She loved music, and going to Church. Family and friends were Alicia’s passion and delight. Alicia also enjoyed traveling, sports, singing, casinos, crocheting, reading the daily newspaper, and a good “chiste” with family and friends.

Alicia graduated from Gonzales High School (GHS) and attended Hartnell College.
Alicia worked many years at the Gonzales Pharmacy where she was visited by the love of her life, Virgilio Sibaja Arango, during their five-year courtship. On November 24, 1957, Alicia was united in marriage to Virgilio Sibaja Arango. In addition to raising their nine children, she was also a teacher’s aide at the GHS where she was known as “Mrs. Sibaja” as well as a as a second mom to many. She loved working with all the students. She especially loved working with the English as a Second Language aka ESL students and being a part of the migrant education program. She volunteered many years in the organizing, teaching dance, and overseeing the yearly Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Alicia was ever calm and serene in her Catholic faith. She was a member of St. Theodore’s Catholic Church, and the Catholic Church ”Iglesia de la Soledad” in Tijuana, Baja California.

Services will be held at Saint Theodore’s Catholic Church, at 116 S Belden St, Gonzales, CA 93926
Viewing will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, September 25, 2017, followed by a Rosary.

Funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017, followed by Interment at the Gonzales Cemetery.

We will have a reception at Saint Theodore’s hall after the interment.
